In order to carry out all the projects that Kiwanis is involved with throughout the year, each member is asked to join one or more committees
FUNDRAISING COMMITTEES
Belk Charity Day: Twice a year Belk Department Store in Fashion Square Mall invites charities to raise money for its projects by selling $5-off coupons to a special sale event –6 – 10 a.m. on a Saturday in early November and early May. The coupon costs $5 and Kiwanis keeps the $5 and the shopper gets $5 off an item on the day of the sale. Kiwanis used to staff a display table at the store on the day of the event and share in the proceeds from coupons sold at the store by all the charities present. There will be no Kiwanis table this year.
Capital District Kiwanis Foundation: For many years, Kiwanis Charlottesville has held a position on the board of the Capital District Kiwanis Foundation. The Foundation raises money to support eight children’s trauma hospitals in the Capital District, including most prominently the UVA Children’s Hospital. The Foundation also sponsors a Teenager of the Year (TOY) Award and gives grants to Kiwanis Clubs and Service Leadership Programs to advance their projects helping children and youth in the Capital District.
Christmas Trees & Wreaths: Our biggest most traditional fundraiser (85th year)–proceeds support the Service Leadership Programs, the Kiwanis Little League team, and the Holiday Day Party for Persons with Disabilities at Worksource. All members are expected to work at least three shifts at the tree lot (if able) and support the effort and its logistics enthusiastically. Active support from Key Clubbers and CKI members is very much appreciated.
Eliminate and Kiwanis Children’s Fund: Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus is a deadly disease that steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and many of their mothers each year. The disease is contracted during childbirth under non-sterile conditions. Tiny newborns suffer painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. Death within a week or ten days is inevitable. The Eliminate Project is Kiwanis International’s current campaign to help eliminate MNT from the face of the earth. A series of three shots costing a total of $1.80 protects a woman and her future babies. Working closely with UNICEF, the goal of the worldwide Kiwanis family is to raise a total of $110 million to provide these shots. As of August 2016 we have met our goal and as of August 2017 we have eliminated MNT in 43 of the 59 priority countries. There are 16 still to go. The club supports this project by awarding the prestigious Hixson Fellowships and Zeller Awards. A special giving campaign takes place in time for Mothers Day. Our Key Clubs do Trick or Treat for UNICEF and car washes, bake sales, and dances to benefit this project.
Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville Foundation: The Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville Foundation Inc., a 501 c (3) non-profit, charitable organization, was established on July 18, 2014. The board chair is Philip Day and the vice-chair is Eric Lamb. The current president of the Kiwanis Cub is an ex-officio member of the Foundation board. Mission: to improve the world by serving children and youth, one child and one community at a time. Purpose: to aid people in need of assistance, particularly young people; to assist youth in attaining vocational excellence; to aid persons with disabilities in attaining happy, useful lives.
Kiwanis Dogwood Pancake Breakfast: The Dogwood Pancake Breakfast is one of our club’s two annual “signature” projects. For these signature projects individual members of our club advocate for a particular beneficiary, and the decision is made by a vote of the membership. It takes place the morning of Charlottesville’s Dogwood Festival Parade (usually 4th Saturday in April). The breakfast is open to the public from 7:30 to 11:00 in the Fellowship Hall of the First Presbyterian Church at 500 Park St – only a couple blocks off the parade route. Tickets are available from Kiwanis members, from staff and directors of the beneficiary, and at the door. In addition to proceeds from ticket sales, more than two dozen local businesses purchase ads printed on the placemats or give in-kind contributions. One of the fun aspects of the breakfast is the “Celebrity Pancake Flippers,” usually local media personalities or civic officials, who join us in making and serving the pancakes.
Kiwanis Independence Day 5K Race (KID5K): The Kiwanis Independence Day 5K Run/Walk is the other of our club’s two annual “signature” projects. This coming July 4th will be the 35th annual running of the “KID5K” For the past eleven years, proceeds have gone to Camp Holiday Trails. CHT is a summer camp for children with special health needs. It is rustic, but is conveniently located just a few miles from the Fontaine Avenue exit of the Route 250 Bypass. Our partnership with CHT goes back to their founding over 40 years ago and has included many hands-on service projects up at the camp. The KID5K course runs through picturesque Forest Lakes North, just off Route 29 across from Hollymead Town Centre at Timberwood Blvd. The start and end points will be at Sutherland Middle School in the Hollymead Subdivision. Better Living has been the event sponsor for the past ten years, and, in addition, about 20 additional local businesses support our efforts by placing ads on the tee shirts given to all runners, and they donate food and drink refreshments and prizes. The meet itself is sanctioned by and managed by the Charlottesville Track Club.
March of Dimes: A Kiwanis-preferred charity for more than 75 years, Kiwanis Charlottesville has recently committed teams to participate in the annual March for Babies in the spring. Other national charities we support: Alzeihmers Association, American Heart Association.
Salvation Army Red Kettle and Telethon: For years the club has been covering two locations from 10 a.m until 4 p.m.–usually the Kroger at Rio Hills and the Giant at Rivanna Ridge. The Key Clubs set up their own schedule with the Salvation Army and are able to ring the bell at a half dozen other locations. Our combined efforts, plus participation in the on-line kettle campaign, allows Kiwanis and the K-Family to make a big difference for the Salvation Army. In recent years Kiwanis has taken a leadership role in challenging callers to donate during the annual telethon broadcast in mid-September by CBS 19 and simulcast by WCHV 1260 AM news radio.
‘Tis the Season Pancake Breakfast: The 3rd annual event will be hosted by Hilton Garden Inn on Pantops. Beneficiaries this year will be Ronald McDonald House Charities, People Places Foster Family/Adoption Agency, and the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital Safety Store. Last year nearly 300 pancake breakfasts were prepared and served by hotel staff. Kids and their families enjoyed meeting Santa and Mrs. Claus and “the Elf-ettes” while others participated in arts and crafts and fun and games organized by the YMCA and by Ronald McDonald House. Each of the four beneficiaries received checks for $750 as a result of this project.
Wine & Dine for the Kids: The area’s finest restaurants have stepped up to share ten percent of the proceeds from the day’s sales to benefit the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville Foundation in support of Kiwanis projects benefiting children and youth. This committee’s goal is to have one Wine & Dine event per month. In past years, we enjoyed events at the Lafayette Inn in Stanardsville, Travinia’s and Alex and Ani’s, Shadwell’s, Kardinal Hall, Beer Run, BJ’s, and Carmello’s.

Service work takes place from 6 until about 7:30, when a simple catered meal is enjoyed by everyone.
Holiday Party for Persons with Disabilities (at Worksource): Each December the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville hosts a holiday party for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities at WorkSource Enterprises on Carlton Avenue. We usually serve a catered dinner of barbecue and fixings to 110+ guests, including young adults with disabilities along with their caregivers. We follow that up with a popular show by “Mr. Magic” (one of whose specialties is creating wearable balloon sculptures) and a visit by Santa and his elves.
Kiwanis Cozy Comforts: Kiwanis Cozy Comforts is a gift of love and support for children and families in transitional and/or difficult situations. The goal is to show these families and children they are warm, safe, cared for and inspire them to have fun together as well. Items in each backpack will vary based on need but might include hand-made blankets to surround them with warmth; books and puzzles to share together as a family; nightlights for security and safety; and personal care items to ensure health and well-being. Our hope is that each backpack will bring a small sense of security and comfort to these children and their families as they navigate the challenges of transition and ensure them that they are happy, healthy, safe and loved.
Kiwanis/Walmart Collaboration: In November, 2018 the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville Foundation became the new donation distribution arm for Walmart Store #1780 in Charlottesville. Non-perishable items like clothing, small electronics, toys, school supplies, sports equipment, household items of all types, lawn and garden items, and more are made available to Kiwanis on a weekly basis for distribution to community agencies in need of gifts-in-kind. The Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville has reached out to more than a dozen such community agencies since this partnership has been in effect and now has distributed more than $104,000 worth of gifts-in-kind.
Kiwanis Little League Team, Carson Raymond Foundation, and Charlottesville TomSox: Our members have always been “big baseball fans” and we love to support children and youth who aspire to playing and enjoying the sport for life. We’ve sponsored the Little League team for more than 60 years, the Carson Raymond Foundation for 8 years, and the Tom Sox for 3 years. We especially like to team up with UVA baseball to help promote youth baseball in our area.
Kiwanis One Day: Each year, Kiwanis clubs around the world join in a day of service. Kiwanis One Day is held on the fourth Saturday of October. In 2017, Kiwanis One Day will be observed on Saturday, October 28 and will take place in cooperation with the Salvation Army. In April 2016 Kiwanis Charlottesville accomplished Kiwanis One Day at the Salvation Army Family Store, involving 40 Kiwanians, K-Family members, and members of the Salvation Army board, including some who are members of other civic organizations. On October 22, 2016 we helped the Salvation Army conduct its annual Harvest Festival Celebration and Information Fair at the gym on Ridge Street. Volunteer opportunities for the entire K-Family were also available at the Family Store on Cherry Avenue.
Support of Spiritual Aims: Object 1 – To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life. Object 2 – To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. For several years our club has supported the Good News Jail & Prison Ministry at Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail. At every club meeting, time is taken for a moment of spiritual reflection.
Young Children Priority One: Children’s needs vary from community to community. With Young Children Priority One, our club can assess what the youngest members in our area need the most, then address those needs with the full support of Kiwanis International behind us. Young Children Priority One focuses on children prenatal through age 5 through four areas: 1) maternal and child health; 2) child care and development; 3) parent education and support; 4) safety and pediatric trauma.
